Julie Sooy

Flute Orchestra Director

Julie Sooy, director of the WMFA Flute Orchestra, brings conducting experience, excellent flute skills, musical depth and effective leadership. After earning bachelors and masters degrees in music she taught music at the elementary school, middle school and college levels.  Since 1998 she has been teaching at Hope College including flute choir, music theory, aural skills and private flute lessons.  In addition, she published an article on tuning flute choirs in Flute Talk Magazine.  As a flutist she has performed with various groups including the West Shore Symphony, Grand Rapids Civic Theatre, Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and the Holland Symphony as well as in many recitals and solo performances.  Julie is devoted to enjoying music through flute and to helping others do the same.  Julie subs with Holland Symphony and West Michigan Symphony, and plays with the praise band at Central Wesleyan Church. Never a dull moment, Julie's 3 kids and husband fill her life with much joy and busy-ness.  When not playing flute or doing mom-stuff, Julie can be found doing some serious biking in the country-side all around West Michigan.

Brandy Hudelson has been called the flutist of the future for her consummate artistry and adaptability as a soloist, orchestral musician, contemporary specialist, composer, teacher and beatbox flutist. Brandy's beatbox etudes, duos and quartets are in great demand amongst flutists today. Brandy's duo neoterica flutes performs everything from her original compositions to Stockhausen with choreography. In demand as an orchestral musician, Brandy Hudelson won her first orchestral audition at age nineteen with the Battle Creek Symphony and went on to win positions with the Lansing Symphony and West Michigan Symphony by age twenty-one. She has performed with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Toledo Symphony Orchestra, New Music Detroit, the Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings, New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players, the Cut-Time Players, Flint Symphony Orchestra, Michigan Sinfonietta, Dubuque Symphony Orchestra and many others. Ms. Hudelson is a sought after teacher, recitalist and lecturer. She has served on the faculties of Oakland University, Interlochen Arts Camp and Hillsdale College. She also directs and teaches a summer workshop series that includes Contemporary Flute, a Flute Intensive of fundamentals and The Art of Beatboxing in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She has taught masterclasses and given recitals for the National Flute Association, Interlochen Arts Academy, Bowling Green State University, the Great Lakes Flute Festival, the University of Toledo, Calvin College, the Southeast Michigan Flute Association and the West Michigan Flute Association. Her engaging performances and deep knowledge combined with her sense of humor to make her one of the most sought after contemporary teachers in North America. As the flutist of the Aurea Silva Trio, Ms. Hudelson continues to expand the repertoire for this innovative chamber ensemble consisting of flute, bassoon and piano. The trio is committed to popularizing the existing pieces for this instrumentation and has commissioned and performed more than ten new pieces in two years. Ms. Hudelson holds a Certificate in Advanced Flute Studies from Carnegie Mellon University where she studied with Alberto Almarza and Jeanne Baxtresser. She earned her Master of Music in Performance from the University of Michigan with Amy Porter and Bachelor of Music in Performance from Michigan State University with Richard Sherman. She has also studied extensively with Jeffery Zook of the Detroit Symphony. - See more at: http://brandyhudelson.com/about.html#sthash.NIIZ1k76.dpuf
