
Bret Hoag, guitar
Throughout the years, Bret Hoag has distinguished himself as an educator, ensemble performer and soloist. Bret’s musical journey started early and became his career when he received his bachelor degree of music in classical guitar performance in May of 2000 from the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory located on the campus of Oberlin University in Ohio. In 2002, Bret received his Master’s degree of music in guitar performance with cognates in Music Technology and music composition from the University of Indiana.
Currently Bret is a special lecturer at Oakland University where he teaches a variety of guitar classes for non-majors as well as keeping his own studio of guitar majors. Bret also teaches a course online on the History of Rock and Roll. Recently Bret began conducting the Oakland University guitar ensemble.
Before landing at Oakland University, Bret was a full-time professor at the Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). In his spare time, Bret enjoys spending time with his wife Melissa, his son Atticus and their cat Sam as well as checking out new contemporary music. Bret is also lover of jazz music and has performed at the Detroit Jazz Festival.
Bret Hoag has performed in various ensemble casts as well as performing as a solo artist throughout his years. Performances include various solo recitals at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis (UIPUI) as well as performing at the university’s faculty artist series.
Aside from his full solo recitals, Bret has also performed in major ensembles including a guitar and flute duet during the faculty artist series at UIPUI. Bret has collaborated with many artists over the years including Jeffery Zook, flutist; Lori Newman, flutist; George Stoffan, clarinetist; Drake Dantzler, tenor; Kelly Holst, soprano; and Davis Brooks, violinist.
Bret has also performed twice during the Jazz Festival in Detroit, Michigan and was a member of the Jack Gilfoy Trio during their “Concert on the Canal” performance series in Indianapolis.
Other professional experiences for Bret include the creation of an instructional guitar DVD which was also presented at a joint meeting of TI:ME Midwest Regional Conference/IMEA Convention. Bret has also received the Innovative Artist Award as well as the Trustee Lecturer Development Grant at IUPUI for his development of a guitar methods book.
